While major tech companies like Bing, Yahoo and Google have
failed with the fundamental design of their web applications, lead generating
agencies keep taking advantage of their broken platforms, adding fake virtual
locations to the search results, tricking consumers while affecting local
garage door repair companies and businesses. Although Google took some measures
to eliminate the practice, their dedicated team is clearly failing. Went into
effect February 1996, Section 230 protects tech companies from being liable and
legally responsible for the content that they host on their platforms if it is
posted by others. As major web search engines aren’t willing to enforce their
own guidelines, it is crucial that lawmakers act to prevent on-line fraud, protect
consumers and local businesses.
